4 ways BCIT supports women in trades and engineering
In celebration of International Women’s Day, the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is proud to highlight some of the many resources available to support women in trades. Whether you’re exploring a career in skilled trades or already on your path, BCIT provides opportunities to gain hands-on experience, financial assistance, mentorship, and career support. Here are four ways BCIT is supporting women for success in the trades and engineering industries.
ConnectHer Hub: Your network for success
Building a strong support network is essential for anyone entering the trades industry. This is why the BCIT ConnectHer Hub serves as a a dynamic space where women in trades can find mentorship, connect with industry professionals, attend networking events, and find tailored resources. Trades Discovery for Women: A hands-on introduction to the industry
If you’re unsure which trade is right for you, the Trades Discovery for Women program is a perfect way to explore a snippet of many different areas of trades. This 16-week program offers hands-on experience in 15 different trade disciplines. Some areas of exploration would be in the construction, mechanical, transportation, and manufacturing sectors.
Coast Capital Savings has been supporting this program for two consecutive years and is committed to providing ongoing funding and resources for female students wanting to gain skills training and pursue rewarding careers in trades within an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive environment.
Graduates of the program are prepared to successfully enter and complete trades/technical training or seek apprenticeship. Learn more about the program here.
Women in Engineering Entrance Awards: Financial support to get started
Finances should never be a barrier to education. BCIT offers financial support through a number of awards and bursaries, including Women in Engineering Entrance Awards, the Adera Development Entrance Award for Women in Trades, and more. These awards ease the financial burden of tuition, allowing students to focus on their education and future careers. Our Financial Aid and Awards team is here to help you.
Industry connections and career opportunities
One of the many advantages of studying at BCIT is the access to industry partnerships and career-building opportunities. BCIT works closely with top employers to create job placements, apprenticeships, and networking events specifically for women in trades. These connections help students transition from the classroom to the workforce with confidence and high sought-after skills. The Centre for Workplace Education also provides student resources such as eJOBS—BCIT’s free job board where students and recent graduates can find full-time or part-time job, summer work, or an internship opportunity.
