Thompson Rivers University and Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) marked the start of construction of a new $22 million Indigenous Education Centre on the Kamloops campus in a groundbreaking ceremony held on Thursday, September 19th.
The ceremony, which featured a welcome prayer, an honour song and ceremonial photos, was described as a “celebration” of shared commitments to learning and community, said TRU President and Vice-Chancellor Brett Fairbarin.
The centre will feature a community gathering space inspired by Secwépemc summer lodges, outdoor classrooms integrating natural elements and dedicated areas for Elders, ceremonial activities and Indigenous research.
The centre was developed in partnership by the university and TteS and designed by Indigenous architect Patrick Stewart.
“It will be a ‘home away from home’ that fosters a deep sense of belonging and support, allowing learners to thrive in an environment where they can truly be themselves,” said TRU Chancellor DeDe DeRose.
