Students enrolled at Selkirk College will soon have access to new student housing at both the Castlegar and Nelson campuses.

The province has approved a three-storey, 112 bed building for Castlegar and a two-storey, 36 bed for the Silver King Campus in Nelson. Both buildings will include two units for families and two accessible units.

The new student housing buildings are meant to not only increase on-campus housing options but also reduce pressure on the local rental market.

“This wonderful announcement means more of our learners can access safe and modern on-campus housing that is close to classrooms and services while having an opportunity to meet new friends,” says Rhys Andrews, vice-president of education at Selkirk College.

Founded in 1966, Selkirk College was the first rural regional community college in BC.

The college has over 60 programs, more than 2,800 full-time students and campuses in Castlegar, Nelson, Trail and Grand Forks.

There are currently 100 beds at the Castlegar campus and 109 at the Nelson campus.

Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2023.
